Exclusive Portrait Sitting

Queen Elizabeth II granted portrait artist Basia Hamilton an exclusive/private sitting, which took place at Windsor Castle on 6th May 2022.

From this sitting, the 'Queen Elizabeth II Portrait by Basia Hamilton' was painted and completed on 25th May 2022, in time for the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

The original now hangs at Windsor Castle.

Think about the significance behind this portrait -

Just a few weeks away from the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, in May 2022, this was one of the most important celebrations in the history of the monarchy, and Queen Elizabeth II gave time and access for Basia Hamilton to paint her.

It is also worth thinking about the Covid19 pandemic, which at that time social distancing restrictions had only recently been removed. The fact that this portrait sitting happened has created a portrait that will be part of historical importance forever.

Queen Elizabeth II liked the completed portrait so much it was rearranged where the original was displayed at Windsor Castle, rather than at the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London, which was the initial agreement.

Your Majesty,
I am so greatly honoured and so very delighted to learn from HRH The Duke of Kent that your Majesty likes my portrait and would accept it as a jubilee gift for Windsor Castle.
That would be a small thank you gift from all Polish people who lived happily in the United Kingdom since the war.
We love this country and we love you!
